Hearing & Ear Conditions

 Otitis externa (swimmer’s ear)

A painful infection or inflammation of the canal between the eardrum and the outer ear. Repeated infections (chronic otitis externa) may affect hearing and lead to other complications.

Otitis media (glue ear)

Glue ear is when the ear fills up with thick fluid. It can develop after a middle ear infection. If antibiotics don’t work to clear the infection, grommets inserted into the ear can help drain the fluid.

Recurrent acute otitis media

Acute otitis media is a painful ear infection where the area behind the eardrum (middle ear) becomes inflamed and infected. Repeat bouts can cause complications in both adults and children.

Ear perforation

Cholesteatoma

A cholesteatoma is skin growth that can develop behind the ear drum. As it grows larger, it can affect hearing, balance and some facial movement. Surgery to remove the growth can prevent further damage.

Tinnitus

Tinnitus often described as ringing in the ears – or can be experienced as other noises like buzzing, clicking or humming. Some health conditions can make tinnitus worse.

Surfer’s ear (exostosis)

Repeated prolonged exposure to cold water or wind is the primary cause of surfer’s ear (exostoses). In this condition, the bone of the ear canal narrows creating a blocked feeling or pain.

Otosclerosis

A type of abnormal bone growth in the middle ear, otosclerosis can cause progressive hearing loss and affect balance. The recommended treatment includes surgery and hearing aids.

Prominent ears
