Your Initial Appointment
Appointments can be made by calling reception on: (02) 8859 9555 or via email: contact@northviewent.com.au
To make an appointment with Dr Sebastian Ranguis, you will need a referral from your GP.
Your GP may send a copy of your referral electronically to our team. Alternatively, if you have a copy of your referral, please email it to us at contact@northviewent.com.au with your contact details (name, telephone and email address). You can also fax your referral to (02) 8859 9556.
We will contact you to confirm your details and make an appointment time.
Please arrive 15 minutes early to your first appointment to complete your patient registration.
Dr Ranguis’ initial consultation generally takes between 30-45 minutes. During your appointment, Dr Ranguis will ask questions to help understand your problem and medical history. He may also look in your ears, nose or throat and discuss the results of any tests. If further tests are needed, our team will help you organise these.
What to bring with you
Please bring these items with you to your appointment:
Referral letter from GP or letters from previous specialists (eg paediatricians)
Details of any previous surgeries
Results from any blood tests, hearing tests or imaging (scans)
List of any medications (including over the counter medicines eg nasal sprays)
Medicare card and private health insurance details
Visiting with children
We understand that coming to see a specialist can be a stressful time for patients, especially if you are bringing young children or infants to see Dr Ranguis. Bringing a few toys or snacks may help kids to feel at home while we prepare for their appointment or discuss their results with you.
We are a family-run practice and we are very sensitive to the needs of all our patients, and young children especially. Our aim is for every patient and every family to feel welcome and supported under our care. We welcome you to ask questions so we can work together to address any concerns.
What if I need to cancel my appointment?
Please contact us by phone as soon as possible if you are unable to attend the clinic for your appointment. Not attending your appointment increases our waiting list for everybody, which delays care and treatment for other children and adults waiting to see Dr Ranguis. Late cancellations or failure to attend may incur fees.
We respect your time and try our best to keep appointments to their allocated time. However, some conditions are more complex than others. We ask for your patience and understanding.
Fees and payments
Please contact us if you would like more information about consultation fees prior to your visit. Consultation fees are partly covered by Medicare and rebates can be automatically credited to your bank account.
Surgical fees vary according to surgeon, clinical situation and your individual private health cover (insurer, type of policy and level of cover). If Dr Ranguis has recommended surgery as part of your treatment, our team will prepare a separate quote for you.
Planning your visit
Our practice is located in Northbridge in Sydney’s Lower North Shore. We are easily accessible by car and public transport. See our Contact page for more information on visiting our practice including where to find us.

Do I need a referral to see Dr Ranguis?
Yes. From GP, Medical Specialist or Dentist to allow Medicare Rebate but also importantly for your health continuity of care.
How quickly will I be seen?
Our team will fit you in for an appointment as soon as possible. Be aware that it may take a few weeks to wait for your appointment. For urgent appointments we recommend your referring doctor to contact us to discuss your case.
Do I need to pay for my consultation at the time of my appointment?
As recommended by the Australian Medical Association, our practice takes fees for your consultation at the time of the consultation. Your Medicare Rebate will be processed on the same day of your appointment and will generally be transferred within 2 business days.
What if I need surgery?
Our team will discuss the process of booking in for surgery. This includes whether you would prefer to be booked in as a private or a public patient. Our available next hospital lists will be discussed with you so that you can decide on the most suitable location and time for your procedure.
Do I need an anaesthetic or medical review prior to surgery?
Your information will be provided to your anaesthetist who will then decide whether further review is required. In most cases, your anaesthetist may contact you a few days prior to surgery if there are any further reviews that are required. For patients with more complex medical conditions, an anesthetic review will be arranged to discuss your medical conditions and order further investigations if required.
When should I start fasting for surgery?
The hospital bookings staff will contact you with fasting times prior to your surgery. In adults the fasting time is generally the midnight prior to your surgery time. For children the times will be more precise and will be determined by your child’s listed time on their surgery date. In general, in children the fasting time for solid foods is 6 hours prior to surgery, with water allowed up to 2 hours prior to surgery.
Can I still take my medications when fasting?
Your surgeon and anaesthetist will clarify with you which medications to stop on the day of surgery. For patients taking blood thinning medication, the decision to stop prior to surgery and when to stop will be discussed in detail with you depending on your treatments.
How do I book in to the hospital?
Please discuss with our team regarding your hospital preferences and the timing which will be suitable for your surgery.
What should I bring to hospital?
Please bring all your medical history, list of medications, regular medications, xray images and investigation results. If coming for an overnight stay, please bring a change of clothes and a bag of toiletries.
When to contact us prior to surgery?
Our team will provide you with all the required information to make your trip to hospital as easy as possible. We will let you know what is required and what further information we need. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your surgery date please contact us to discuss.
What happens after the operation?
Depending on your surgery you may need to stay one night in hospital, or extra nights for more complex procedures. During your stay in hospital, the doctors and nurses looking after you will provide you with your required medications, diet and in-hospital care. As you get closer to being discharged, our team will update you on your condition and provide a plan with your required care once you leave the hospital. In general, patients will be seen again in our practice for a review in the first 2 weeks following their operation.
How long do I stay in hospital?
For Day Surgery you will be discharged 4 hours after the end of your procedure. In general this is the afternoon of the day of surgery.
For Overnight Stay you will be discharged from hospital after your morning review by the nursing and medical staff. This generally occurs around 9am. If your team decide that it is best that your stay is extended, you will be updated with the plan and all your in-hospital management will be extended as is necessary.
