Nose Conditions

Nasal obstruction

A nasal obstruction is a common symptom of nasal disorders that cause nasal passages to become blocked. Some common causes of a nasal obstruction include allergies, enlarged adenoids and nasal polyps.

Sinusitis

Sinusitis is when the lining of the sinus passages near the nose become infected. There are many different causes and depending on the severity, surgery may be recommended to help relieve symptoms.

Nasal polyps

Nasal polyps are soft growths inside your nose or sinus passages. Large polyps can block the nasal passages and cause difficultly with breathing and your ability to smell. Surgery is often needed to remove them.

Allergic rhinitis

Hay fever is the common name for allergic rhinitis. It affects 1 in 5 people in Australia and can be worse at certain times of year (seasonal hay fever) or be triggered by allergens like dust and animal fur.

Non-allergic rhinitis

Symptoms of non-allergic rhinitis (chronic sneezing and runny nose) are similar to those of hay fever without evidence of an allergic reaction. Triggers include irritants, weather changes and certain foods.

Septal deviation

A septal deviation is when the thin wall between nasal passages is off to one side, making one nasal passage smaller. It can block one side of the nose and cause problems with breathing and airflow.
