Otoplasty (ear pinning surgery)
What is otoplasty?
Otoplasty, also known as ear pinning surgery, is a cosmetic procedure to change the shape, position or size of the ears. It can be done at any age after the ears have grown to their full size (usually at five years old and above).
Why have this procedure?
People usually choose to have otoplasty when they don’t like how far their ears stick out from their head or would like to change how their ears look following previous ear surgery.
What is involved in this procedure?
Otopasty is usually performed using twilight sedation and local anaesthetic, which means you will not feel or remember anything about your procedure. In some cases, general anaesthetic is used. Ear pinning surgery typically takes about two hours.
Your ENT surgeon will use otoplasty techniques that best suit the type of correction you need. For example, your surgeon may make small incisions on the back of your ears or within the inner creases ears to remove excess cartilage and skin. The cartilage is then folded into the proper position and secured with internal stitches. You will also have additional stitches to close the incisions.
What should I expect after surgery?
After surgery, you’ll wear bandages over your ears for protection and support. Some discomfort and itchiness is normal and you can take pain medication as required. You’ll need to avoid sleeping on your side while your incisions heal. After a few days, your bandages come off and you’ll see your new ears.
Where will I have my surgery?
Otoplasty is performed in hospital and is usually booked as a day procedure. If you have private health cover, you can choose to have the surgery at North Shore Private Hospital, Castlecrag Private Hospital or Northern Beaches Hospital.
